Preschools
Grace Lutheran Preschool of La Grange, 200 N. Catherine Ave., is expanding its Parent’s Day Out program. Children ages 2-5 (pre-kindergarten) may enroll from 12:15-3 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays ($25) from October-April. In addition, Grace Holiday Parent’s Day Out will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays ($35) from November-January. First Congregational Church of Western Springs Preschool is accepting applications for the 2010-11 school year. Morning and afternoon class times are available. Hinsdale Community Preschool enrichment-class registration is available for kindergartners and preschoolers for September at 415 W. Eighth St., Hinsdale. Classes provide a blend of academic, cultural and artistic exposure. Call (630) 325-7484.
La Grange Area Head Start preschool program for children ages 3 though 5 has open enrollment for the 2010-11 school year. Services are provided at no cost for qualifying families, and children with special needs are welcome. Call (708) 482-2430, Ext. 3047.
Elmhurst Unit District 205 Madison Early Childhood Education Center’s pre-school program will be screening students who will be age 3 by Sept. 1 for the 2010-11 school year. Children are screened by staff using the Creative Curriculum, a research-based curriculum that is aligned with the Illinois Early Learning Standards. The program takes place five days a week, and morning or afternoon sessions are available. The program closely follows the District 205 attendance calendar. Clarendon Hills Park District’s Active Learners Preschool is accepting registration for its fall 2010 programs for students ages 3-4 at the Community Center, 315 Chicago Ave. Classes for 3-year-old children will meet from 8:45-11:15 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Children in the program must be 3 by Sept. 1. The 4-year-old class will meet from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, also at the Community Center. Children in this program must be 4 by Sept. 1. Tuition for the fall session, Sept. 8 to Dec. 17, is $725 for residents of Clarendon Hills, $775 for nonresidents. Raggedy Anne Learning Center, 232 S. York Road, Elmhurst, is accepting applications for the 2010-11 school year for preschool and full-time day care. Hot lunch and snacks are included with all-day care, which is available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children may enroll for 2 to 5 days per week, and tuition may be paid monthly or weekly. Grand Avenue Preschools has opened enrollment for nationally accredited preschool classes for the 2010-11 school year. Classes are available for 3-year-old, 4-year-old and pre-kindergarten children. Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Elementary District 181 is accepting applications for the 2010-11 blended preschool program for children ages 3- to 5-years-old who are not age-eligible for kindergarten. The program is open to children who live within the district. The tuition-based, preschool education will be provided 2 1/2 hours each day, five days a week, and includes an early childhood screening. The program follows the District 181 school-year calendar. Oak Brook Park District ABC preschool program for 3- and 4-year-olds offers hands-on activities, including art projects and games, so learning can be fun. Through free play, the children learn to enhance social skills and share. Oak Brook Park District, in conjunction with Butler Elementary District 53, provides a blended preschool program, offering every preschool child in the district a chance to participate in a standard preschool program, regardless of special needs. Preschool registration is open for fall 2010 at Christ Church of Oak Brook, 31st Street and York Road. Christ Church Preschool offers a faith-based curriculum for 3- to 5-year-olds, as well as a children’s discovery center and new outside playground for warm-weather days. Children will enjoy field trips, special events and more. Classes are available Tuesdays and Thursdays, Mondays and Wednesdays, or Monday through Thursday. Longer days also are offered Fridays. Elmhurst Academy, 212 W. Lake St. is registering for the 2010 summer session and the 2010-11 school year. Elmhurst Academy is a private, Reggio Emilia-inspired, early childhood school, educating children from birth through kindergarten. Cass Elementary District 63 has kindergarten and preschool registration packets for the 2010-11 school year in the Concord School office, 1019 Concord Place, Darien. To be eligible for kindergarten, a child must have reached his/her fifth birthday on or before Sept. 1. For the preschool program, a child must be 3-years-old. Trinity Lutheran School, 11503 German Church Road in Burr Ridge is now accepting applications for the 2010-11 school year. Registration is open to the community for the 2-year-old mom and tot class, 3- and 4-year-old preschool, and kindergarten through eighth grade. Seton Montessori School, 5728 Virginia in Clarendon Hills is accepting registration for fall classes. Programming is available for children ages 2 months through 9 years. Fall offerings include morning, afternoon, extended-day and all-day classes for children who are young toddlers through lower elementary students. A parent-child program also is offered. Lyons Township Community Advisory Council is seeking persons interested in serving a two-year term. Interested volunteers can contact the superintendent’s office at (708) 579-6451 for an application, or download an application from the LTCAC web page at www.lths.net. The LTCAC has 60-70 members, including staff, students, parents and community members, who represent the entire Lyons Township High School community when speaking directly to the Board of Education. The council meets five times during the school year. The meeting agendas are designed cooperatively by the council and the administration. Materials are presented by staff directly involved with those programs, and members have a chance to ask questions and respond. There is a 30-minute time period at every meeting to address other issues of concern to LTCAC members.
Lyons Township High School Hall of Fame committee is looking for volunteers. For LT alum or friends of the district interested in choosing this year’s Hall of Fame inductees, call (708) 579-6483. Committee members are asked to attend four meetings per year, with the bulk of the work completed in June. The Hall of Fame recognizes alumni and friends of LT who have brought great credit and distinction to the school through their accomplishments or service in the arts, athletics, business, education, public service or other professions.
Elmhurst Academy has announced a new collaboration, Positive Parenting DuPage — a multifaceted, countywide collaboration comprised of dozens of organizations that work with families during the first five years of a child’s life. Based in primary prevention methods, Positive Parenting is working to change the culture of parenting and child development in DuPage County, in order to lower the incidences of child abuse and neglect, and increase effective parenting. The collaboration coordinates educational materials, and strengthens linkages and access to support for all families.

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-3rd, of Western Springs, is presently accepting letters requesting nomination to the U.S. Service Academies from young persons in the 3rd Congressional District for the class entering in the summer of 2011. The service academies include: Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.; West Point Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.; and Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. Coast Guard admissions are based on a nationwide competition, with no congressional nominations. Potential candidates must have reached their 17th birthday and not be past their 23rd birthday on July 1 of the year they would enter the academy; be a U.S. citizen; have graduated from high school; be unmarried; have taken the ACT and/or SAT test, and meet the stringent entrance requirements of their preferred academy. The selection of nominees is based upon a whole-person evaluation. Although nominations will not be made until January 2011, all interested persons are encouraged to submit their written requests as soon as possible. Closing date for completed files is Dec. 1. Elmhurst Police Department’s Peer Jury Program is a tool used to divert nonviolent, first-time juvenile offenders from formal court action. The program is designed to counsel juveniles through peer mediation, giving individuals a second chance at becoming successful law-abiding citizens. Peer jurors consist of high-school student volunteers from York, Timothy Christian and Immaculate Conception high schools.
