Construction in Clarendon Hills

Here is a resource from The Doings for you to look at and plan your routes around the village.  Some homes will be affected but the plan is to keep things moving quickly.

Clarendon Hills residents will have to maneuver around another road closure Sept. 7 as the Flagg Creek sewer project moves through the village.

Eastern Avenue is now blocked off between Prospect and Harris avenues and the next closure will affect Park Avenue between Prospect and Walker avenues for about four to six weeks.

Jim Liubicich, a district engineer with Flagg Creek, told The Doings the construction crew is on schedule.

“December 2011 it will be fully functional and we’re well within that timeframe,” he said.

The two-year, $14.9 million project will help with sanitary sewer capacity in heavy rainfall for Clarendon Hills and the eastern portion of Westmont.

It is one of the largest and most comprehensive projects done by Flagg Creek and upgrades the system, most of which was built in the 1920s and 1930s, according to a statement by Flagg Creek.

Flagg Creek is installing a gravity relief sewer line in Clarendon Hills that will parallel the main line already there. The district also put in a lift station near the Lions Park Pool at the Hinsdale border and is working on a forced main in Hinsdale.

“We’re working in all three right now,” Liubicich said.

Crews are using a big screw on Eastern Avenue to bore into the earth and push the pipe under the ground. On other streets Liubicich said crews will cut open the street and lay down new pipe.

The new pipe will come in from Westmont at Quincy Street and run east before going south below Richmond. Then it moves on down Park Avenue toward the Public Works and Police Department buildings before heading to the downtown.

The pipe then goes east below Eastern Avenue before going down Harris Avenue and up toward the Lions Park Pool. There, the lift station will help with downhill flooding issues in Hinsdale.

The pipe continues under Route 83 and heads into Hinsdale under Fourth Street and heads south on Monroe Street before running along 55th Street.

Original plans were to run the pipe on Bodin Street but the pipes on Monroe and 55th are larger.

“The level of wastewater will be lowered to ensure we’re using maximum capacity,” Liubicih said.

Flagg Creek Construction Updates

Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District (FCWRD) is currently in the process of constructing a major sanitary relief sewer that runs through sections of Hinsdale, Westmont and Clarendon Hills. The construction project includes more than $14 million in improvements that will help relieve sanitary sewer surcharging during heavy rainfalls. This multi-phase project will result in a number of road closures over the coming months. This webpage will be updated with the latest road closures and detours.

Phase I
The first phase of the project to take place in Clarendon Hills will close Eastern Avenue between South Prospect and Harris Avenue beginning Tuesday, July 27. The closure is anticipated to last three to four weeks. Residents on Eastern will have access to their driveways, and businesses in the affected area will be open and accessible.

Phase II
The second phase of the project will begin shortly after September 7 and is expected to last four to six weeks. It will affect Park Avenue between South Prospect and Walker. Park Avenue will be closed to traffic between Walker Avenue and Walker alley. West-bound Park Avenue between Walker alley and South Prospect will be closed. East-bound Park from Walker Avenue will be open. Some parking will be blocked on Walker and Railroad Avenues. Arrows on map indicate marked detour.

Construction hours for the project are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday with some Saturday work possible. If you have questions, please contact:
