Redd Herring too Expensive? Read on

My wife and I went back to Redd Herring for a “date night” recently. For those of you don’t know what a date night is; when you have 4 little ones running under foot at home, getting away for a little romance is a prescription for sanity. We went mid-week and was very surprised the place was almost packed with what appeared to have the same prescription. There was one birthday party for a grandma celebrated by her kids.

For starters we had the scallops and pork belly. I wasn’t crazy for the pork belly but it provided a great flavor for the scallops. The scallops were perfectly cooked, were thick and meaty. Michael, our waiter was great! He coached me into the double bone chop – apple smoked on a squash puree for $23. When it came to the table, I knew it would be a good night! Double bone, meaning it had two ribs – this thing was huge! It was perfectly cooked, a little pink which is the way I like it and juicy with a luscious smoked smell and taste that I haven’t stopped dreaming about since that night. I’ll go on record here; this was by far the absolute best chop I have EVER sunk my teeth into! I don’t think that I can order anything else from Redd Herring for fear I would miss the chop. This was also the best value I’ve had this year, by far. My wife had the butter and blue salad. We shared a plate of brussels sprouts for $5 (which was a huge plate and good value too).

I guess the reason I mention the value is because I’ve heard some rumblings around about the cost being a little high. Yeah, the burger is $13 bucks and might solicit a visit from the Miller High Life guy but from what I have experienced, this is leap above the suburban restaurants on Butterfield Road and others around. In fact, I think this is a great down town Chicago style restaurant. It gets 5 Stars for value!

Homeowners from Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Oak Brook and Westmont areas will find this is an easy to get to location with plenty of parking. Located off the Metra’s Burlington Northern Clarendon Hills stop, even folks from Chicago could take the train for an evening and enjoy this unique find.
